What this app does

Insect Detector lets you take or upload a photo of an insect and uses an AI vision service to identify it. It's a small independent project, not run by a company.

What data is collected

Photos. When you take or upload a photo to identify, it's sent to Google's Gemini API for analysis. The photo is used only to generate the identification result and is not stored by this app beyond what's needed to process that request.

Camera access. The app requests camera permission only to let you take a photo. Nothing is recorded or transmitted unless you actively capture or upload an image.

Feedback ("Correct" / "Learn"). If you use the Correct or Learn buttons after a result, the photo, the AI's original answer, and (for Learn) the correction you enter are saved to help improve future identifications of similar-looking insects. This is stored securely and is not linked to your identity, account, or device.

The app does not require creating an account, and does not knowingly collect your name, email address, or other personal identifiers.

Third parties

Photos submitted for identification are processed by Google's Gemini API, subject to Google's own privacy policy. The app is hosted on Cloudflare, which may log standard technical request data (like IP address) as part of normal web hosting — this is not used by the app itself.

Data retention and deletion

Feedback submitted via Correct/Learn is retained to improve future identifications. If you'd like any feedback you've submitted removed, contact the developer using the details below.

Children's privacy

This app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
